Awesome Oscar Trivia

Martha Fischer, who posts on Cinematical, the best movie blog I can find, came up with an awesome bit of trivia today.

As you're probably aware, George Clooney today was nominated for not one, but two Academy Awards. One for Supporting Actor for his work in "Syriana", and the other for his work directing "Good Night, and Good Luck".

Your trivia... when George Clooney was appearing on "The Facts of Life" (yes, the same sitcom that featured Blair, Tootie, Jo, Natalie and Mrs. Drummond... and a young Molly Ringwald) one of the writers of the show was... Paul Haggis.

The same Paul Haggis who has now been nominated for Oscars two straight years. Last year for his screenplay adaption of "Million Dollar Baby", this year for directing "Crash".

Two of the five Best Director nominees worked on "The Facts of Life"!!!

How About a Little Stereotyping?

I went to the Metropolitan Opera House on Sunday to pick up a little sumthin-sumthin for my niece. I had just been to a drug store and bought soap and whatnot.

So I walk into the Opera House and the guard tells me deliveries need to go through the back. The fucking guy thought I was a Chinese food delivery guy.

Do Asian people not go to the opera? I know I don't.

Who Are Those Guys?

OK, I realize nobody really knows who the Seahawks are or care that they're in the Super Bowl. But, this is getting ridiculous.

The New York Post, I know, is not the greatest newspaper in the world. In fact, calling it a "news" paper is probably stretching the definition. However, in article today about offensive linemen Walter Jones and Steve Hutchinson, the paper referred to Seahawks quarterback "DON Hasselbeck."

Don, a former NFL player, is the father of Seahawks PRO BOWL quarterback Matt Hasselbeck.

Funny Who You Run Into At Work

Walking out to the elevators I ran into this kid. I couldn't place him, but I knew it was 'someone' because he was carrying a guitar and had a mini-posse with him.

Then it hit me.

It was the kid who plays the, uh, kid that Tom Cavanagh's character signs to his new label in the first episode of "Love Monkey". He also appears in the second episode. It seems he has a minor, yet important role in the show, as the musical protege to Tom's character.

Oh, by the way, the kid's name is Teddy Geiger. He was here at work to promote his new album. He's a real musician. Who knew? I thought he was just an actor lip synching to John Maier.

"The Kite Runner" by Khaled Hosseini

It's 1:30 a.m., I should be sleeping. But, I've spent the last three hours finishing up "The Kite Runner", the best book I've ever read. Wow, that's quite a statement. I'll retract slightly.

"The Kite Runner" is the best book I can remember reading. It follows the life of a young boy growing up in Afghanistan until he reaches middle age. I cannot stress to you how moving and powerful this story is.

When it comes to reading, OK, let's face it, life, I'm pretty shallow. I like my books to be funny and to hit close to home. This book is neither funny, nor can I relate to it in any meaningful way. But, I absolutely loved it. I highly recommend it.

Note: the film has been optioned by Dreamworks. Director Marc Forster (Finding Neverland, Monster's Ball) is tied to the project. The film is in pre-production.

"Love Monkey"

I finally got around to watching the Tom Cavanagh show "Love Monkey" on CBS.

Here's the funny thing. Since writing about it a few weeks ago, I couldn't figure out why the show seemed so familiar to me.

The show is about a single guy in New York trying to deal with a new job and getting a grip on his life.

I enjoyed the first two episodes. This show is a keeper as a Tivo Season Pass. The part of the show I find most intriguing is the relationship between Cavanagh and Judy Greer. Greer plays his best friend. I've always had a thing for Greer. There's something I find irresistably delicious about her.

Oh, so why is the show familiar to me? It's based on the novel "Love Monkey" by Kyle Smith, which I read and reviewed this past summer. In the novel, the main character is a bit of a loser with a job at 2nd rate newspaper (think New York Daily News.) About the only things the book and TV series have in common is the city and the lead character is male.

Super Bowl XL

One week from today. Go Seahawks!

Me Aching Knee

After yesterday's great burger, I felt I should go the gym. I got on the eliptical machine for 30 minutes.

About 20 minutes in, I felt my knee get tight. Last night, it got really sore. Now, I'm sitting here with a icepack.

How do I run four marathons with NO knee issues, but spend 30 minutes on a machine at a gym and now I have to ice. It pisses me off!

One of the Great Things About New York

At 2am you can step off the subway, pop into a deli and get a grilled cheese sandwich (or any other sandwich you desire.)

The East Vilage

Went to a birthday for a woman named Jackie. I had never met her prior to tonight. The bar we went to, called Sutra, is located in the Lower East Side... way east, on Avenue A. It's the first time I'd been far enough east that streets turned to letters.

The bar was really crowded and the music was too loud to talk, so we took off and went to a dive bar called Manitoba's. Manitoba's defines dive bar. It's great. Fantastic jukebox.

I met two people who are designers for G Unit. The guy (very gay... not that there's anything wrong with that) designs jackets. The woman (very cute) designs bags.

Beautiful Day

Not a cloud in the sky, 55 degrees, no wind. Beautiful, I tell you.

So beautiful, I went to Burberry and bought a new jacket. Granted, it's a Fall coat on sale now, but it's quite nice for a day like today. It's about hip length in 'Seahawks' blue. It's rather dignified, I'd say.

I've been New York for 3 1/2 months, and I've purchased a winter jacket from H&M, a fall jacket from Burberry, and a spring jacket from Quicksilver. One pair of boots from Timberland and one pair of everday shoes from David Z. That's all the shopping I've done. Not one shirt or pair of pants.

See, this is what happens when you shop for 'timeless' styles and stay away from couture. At least that's what I'm telling myself...

A Damn Fine Burger Joint

Yesterday, I was so craving a nap, burger and beer. As it turned out, I was able to get the beer in Chinatown, alas, there was no burger or nap in sight.

To remedy the situation, I slept in until 11am, then went searching for a good burger. No, a great burger. Since moving to New York, my burgers have been average at best.

A friend recommended I try a place called the Burger Joint. Fantastic. From now on, anytime Allie recommends a restaurant, I'll be there.

The Burger Joint can be found in the Parker-Meridien Hotel on 57th between 6th and 7th. It's a swanky hotel, but the this place is about as non-pretentious as you can get. They offer hambuurgers, cheeseburgers, grilled cheese sanwiches, fries, soda, beer and brownies. End of menu. There's a sign that tells you how to order:

1. Do you want a hamburger or cheeseburger?
2. How do you want it cooked (rare, medium rare, medium, medium-well or well)?
3. What do you want on it (lettuce, tomato, pickles, onions, ketchup, mustard, mayo)?
4. If you don't know your order when you get to the front, you'll be sent to the back of the line.

Holy Soup Nazi! Actually, the folks working there were really nice. Probably the nicest food staff employees I've come across in New York... which is about like saying, as far as bad boy bands go, the Backstreet Boys weren't that horrible. No, I jest. The folks there actually said "hi" and "thank you." I was so touched I nearly cried.

A great cheeseburger for $5.50. This might be the best deal in all of New York.

Hangin' in Chinatown

Went with three co-workers to a downtown joint called the Good World Bar and Grill for dinner and stayed for drinks.

Good World is in the heart of Chinatown. So what did I order? Swedish Meatballs! And they were delicious meatballs, at that.

It's a Swedish/Norwegian restaurant tucked in the heart of Chinatown. While the meatballs were fantastic, the crowd inside was even more delish, if you know what I mean, woot!

A Girl With a Curl

I just started reading this blog and I find it kind of interesting. Her blog only goes back to January 1, but it appears she's the female version of... wait for it... me!

She's new to New York, has a Bono obsession and has a picture of cupcakes in her blog. She even mentions a Tom Cavanagh sighting, for Christ's sake. Her sighting, however, didn't ellicit all the weird comments mine did.

To Haircut, or Not Haircut... That is the Question

The Seahawks haven't lost since my last haircut. OK, they lost once, but it didn't really count since they didn't play any of their best players during the second half of the game.

At the same time, I look like Hell. It's somewhat OK because the weather is getting cold again, so I have a built-in hat-head excuse. But, I don't know if I can go two more weeks.

What do you think? Cut it and mess with destiny? Or let it ride and hope I don't run into Miss Right who will only date guys with perfect hair?

Sleeping Beauty

Last night, I fell asleep at 8:30. Woke up this morning at 8:30 when my alarm went off. I could've gone another couple of hours... easy.

The red eye flight from New York was better than most. After the long day with the football game, I was exhausted. I actually slept on the plane. But, you know there's a story coming.

I was sitting next to a woman who was pretty attractive. Early-20's, coming back to New York after a weekend of snowboarding at Baker. When the plane started up, she immediately fell asleep. And farted! She had the worst gas ever. Seriously, it was completely rancid.

I had to sleep with that little fan thing going. Every once in awhile I actually woke from the stench. I wondered if it was me. So I just sat up awake. The smell went away... then it would return. And it definitely didn't come from my ass.

When she woke up around 6:30, the smells stopped coming. This was the first time I had ever wanted an aisle seat over a window seat.

And you thought the Sleeping Beauty title was about me... I'm not that vain!

Detroit Hawk City

Wish I could take credit for that title, but credit goes to the person who made the sign at Qwest Field on Sunday. I better explain this for anyone not born prior to 1980.

Once upon a time there was this little rock band from Detroit that wore gaudy outfits and painted their faces in black and white. They went by the name of KISS and had a hit with the song "Detroit Rock City".

Anyway, my dad and I are going to the Super Bowl! It's a once-in-a-lifetime thing... until next year, when the game is held in Miami and all the lovely ladies are hanging out in South Beach. Whatever. It's 8 Mile now.

This year will be great! Jealous much?

Quick Weekend

Sitting at Seatac waiting for my flight. I hope to God I can sleep.

I accomplished my three goals... Seahawks game, Thai food and Mee Sum Pastry.

I was also able to spend time with my parents, saw two of my brothers, and saw a few friends.

Just a great weekend. I'm dreading being at my desk in seven hours...

Superbowl XL

I didn't think it would happen in my lifetime. Go Seahawks!

WOW

Holy balls, what a first half. It's so loud in here my ears are ringing. My throat is raw from yelling.

One more half, baby!

The Lusty Lady

Saturday Night

Met up with Jill at the Central Tavern in Pioneer Square. Had a beer and caught up. She cracks me up.

While I was meeting Jill, Josh went to meet Bish and Rob. After leaving the Central, I met up with Rick and Giles at El Gaucho in Belltown.

It was a dry night for me. Funny what driving a car does for your drinking.

For everyone I didn't hook up with this weekend, I'll see you if I ever come back again (ha ha.) I'm guessing the next time I'll be in town will be for Kelly's wedding.

Dinner Saturday Night

Met Josh and Rana for dinner at a place called the Melrose Cafe in Renton, WA. Had an a really good steak. Really good.

If you're ever in the armpit of Western Washington, I recommend the Melrose.

Nervous

I'm so frickin' nervous. Sitting at the bus stop, heading downtown to meet my friends. It's gonna be a great day!

These Are a Few of My Favorite Things

What am I looking forward to in Seattle, outside of the game? Seeing my parents, of course. Also my friends.

I want to get some hum bao from the Mee Sum Bakery in Pike Place Market. Thai food from anywhere. Sitting in my Element. I miss my car, though I don't miss driving.

I guess that about wraps this post up. I expected to write more.

Posting Via SMS

My posts over the weekend will be via text messaging, so if you see weird formatting, or misspelled words, you'll have to cut me some slack. I'm not taking my computer with me back to Seattle.

It'll be nice sleeping in my old bed.

If Ambien Were Candy It Would Be Xmas Every Day

Of the talents I seem to have lost over the years, the one I miss the most dearly is... the ability to fall asleep. Now, I also miss a quicker metabolism, the ability to drink more than four beers without waking up with a headache, and, well, some more private stuff ;)

I know as you get older, you need less sleep. Actually, I'm not really sure that's true, but for the sake of this post, we'll pretend it is. I don't think I'm quite to the age where sleeping four hours a night is acceptable. For one thing, I have no idea what to do with the other 20 hours in the day.

So, here it is, 1am and I'm writing this instead of sleeping. I know I'm going to be up for another few hours. That sucks.

"Must See TV"... Not

Got around to watching "Emily's Reasons Why Not." Not bad. But not good either. Rather flat, I'd say. Which, since it stars Heather Graham and her glorious twins, is pretty ironic.

The premise of the show, a fantastically beautiful, successful book editor who can't find the right man seems rather, I don't know, unbelievable. But then, "Sex and The City" ran for five (six?) seasons based on the same premise. I'm not saying that all beautiful are in fantastic relationships, because I know quite a few that aren't. But, c'mon. This is ROLLERGIRL!

The main issues I have with the show are the gay and the Asian Dragonlady stereotypes. Why must every fantastically beautiful, successful, single woman on TV have a gay friend? Stop it! You don't have to go down this road.

My biggest objection though, is with the Asian Dragonlady. It's nice to a see sister on TV... but why must she play it as Ling (Lucy Liu) from Ally McBeal. This show even does the crazy sound effects when she bats her eyes or turns her head. Stop it!

I hope to God the character of Glitter Cho is allowed to grow past the stereotypes. If she isn't, "Emily's" has given me a good reason why not to watch the show.

Steak and Frites

Tried a new place for the fabled steak and frites. The results weren't as good as my last effort.

Tonight I went to a place called French Roast on 86th and Broadway. I like the ambience, low-key, dark. The steak and fries were quickly served. The fries were excellent, but the steak was a little tough. It was tasty, though.

After dinner, I grabbed some cheddar popcorn from Dale and Thomas Popcorn.

"Just the memory of your face..."

Over the past few days, I've watched both "Against All Odds" and "After Dark, My Sweet". Quick, tell me what both films have in common, in addition to being mediocre, that is. Give up? Rachel Ward.

Rachel Ward. Man, she was smokin' hot. In the lexicon of movie hotties, Rachel Ward is right up there with the best of them. How did she not become a huge star?

Her acting wasn't that bad. She seemed to choose challenging roles. I guess she never "went for it"... never went for the blockbuster. Though, I'm sure she was thinking that "Christopher Columbus: The Discovery" was that breakthrough. Look at this cast: Marlon Brando, Benicio del Toro, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Tom Selleck (at his peak.)

I wonder who the modern day 'Rachel Ward' would be. Amanda Peet? Piper Perabo?

Three Months in New York

Christ, I feel like I've been here half my life. I just knocked back a glass of Airborn (yeah, living on the edge) and it dawned on me that yesterday was my three month anniversary in New York.

I seriously feel like I haven't been back to Seattle in a year. Had the Seahawks lost this weekend, I was actually going to cancel my trip and go somewhere sunny and warm instead.

It's not that I don't miss Seattle, but... well, maybe I don't miss Seattle. What I miss is my friends, though most have come out to see me. Those that haven't come out I've spoken to either on IM, the phone, email or text messages. I miss my family, but I saw most of them in Hawaii last month. I talk to them quite a bit, too. I finally downloaded Skype, so that's another way to get in touch with me. Kaia's Mom, I'll be setting you up on Skype shortly!

I don't know. This really is the greatest city in the world. The only other place I could ever live is Hawaii.

I love New York, but my heart belongs to Maui.

Seriously, It's Really Cold

After wathing the AMAZING Colts - Steelers game, I went up to Pottery Barn to get a shade for the floor lamp I purchased from Home Depot. The chocolate brown shade looks much better in my apartment than the white one it came with.

I also had to buy a light bulb for the lamp I bought from MoMA. The lamp is really cool, made of orange rubber. Unfortunately, the light bulbs I bought don't fit the lamp. I'm hoping I don't need some sort of European bullshit bulb. If so, the lamp will make a nice vase for plastic flowers.

So, it's really really super cold. My fingers were freezing... in gloves... in my pockets. My face was so cold I thought I was getting a bloody nose. Turns out it was just snot.

It's cold... but at least it's not raining!

F-f-f-freezing

It's just about noon now and the temperature is 25 feels like 15. That's cold.

Because of my aching back, I've stopped running for awhile, so I don't have to worry about frostbite. I did the elliptical trainer and mixed in some weightlifting. I'm sure I won't be able to lift my arms tomorrow.

It snowed a little bit last night, but the streets are all clear. I'm going to do some shopping (I need some lights... I literally don't have any right now, just the ceiling lights in the bathroom and kitchen.)

After shopping, I plan on watching some football, then "Cinderella Man," which came via my new Netflix subscription.

Comin' Home

With the Seahawks big (HUGE) win today, I'm going back to Seattle to see the NFC Championship. I get into town at around 10:30pm on Friday and leave at 11pm on Sunday night, so it's a quick trip.

But, if we win, it will definitely be worth it.

More Than Just Pixar

The MoMA Pixar was kind of cool, if not incredibly crowded. The exhibit covered Pixar's art from the early shorts to their upcoming film "Cars."

The other exhibit I checked out was for a French painter named Odilon Redon. His art is pretty fascinating. Of course, I don't know shit about art. But, it's good to look at. Very dark. Kinda spooky.

Off to MoMA

After work tonight, I'm going to head up to the Museum of Modern Art. As you know (or not) I'm a big fan of Disney's animated films.

MoMA has an Art of Pixar exhibit going on through the middle of February. Now that all the visitors have left the city, I figure now's a good time to go.

I'll let you know how it is.

Hey Cupcake

I was just reading the Restless Reader and the writer mentioned she wanted a cupcake for her birthday.

That reminded me, I've become entirely obssessed with this little cupcake bakery in my neighborhood called Crumbs. They have many different flavors of cupcakes, but my favorite is lemon buttercream. Jeez, they are so good. Seriously.

Why, oh why, do I have to live so near this little slice of heaven?

Do I Miss the Rain?

I was asked in a comment if I missed the rain. Do I miss the rain? Does Ray Allen like Keyon Dooling? Will Brad and Angelina stay married until their kid reaches college? Hell, grade school?

It rains in New York. In fact, it poured yesterday. But, today, it was blue skies and mid-50s. However, it's supposed to get down to 30... for a high, on Sunday.

So, do I miss the rain? Absolutely not.

Seahawks on Saturday

My cousins Steven and Donna are coming over for the 4:30 Seahawks game on Saturday. We're going to order in during the game. Should be a good time.

Celebrity Sighting

I was at the Knick game this weekend. At the Garden, sitting within 10 seats of each other were Ethan Hawke, Denzel Washington and Spike Lee.

However, they aren't my celeb sighting. At that same game, I nearly bumped into Tom Cavanagh. Who? Yeah, right, I had to Google him to figure out his name. He's the guy from "Ed."

In fact, I nearly forgot about the sighting until I just saw a promo for his new show "Love Monkey," which actually looks pretty good. I just set a Tivo season pass for it.

Where's Your Ark?

Listening to The Mountain right now. Just heard it's rained 23 straight days in Seattle, and there's a good chance it will break the Seattle record of 33 straight days. Good times.

On the other hand, the same report said that Seattle gets a foot less rain per year than New York. It doesn't seem to rain often here, but when it does, it doesn't screw around.

Dinner in Soho

Rick and I went to great little restaurant in Soho called Downtown by Cipriani. I had filet mignon served in a green peppercorn gravy with fries. It's kinda funny. I've had three steaks in New York and all were served with French Fries. No wonder I love this city.

After dinner, we came back uptown and had a beer at The Dead Poet. Cool place. Will definitely be back.

Too Much of Everything But Sleep

Pretty big weekend. I had two friends come up... Giles from Tampa Bay and Rick from Seattle.

Friday night we had a late dinner at some Irish bar on restaurant row (46 and 8th). We then went to a piano bar called Don't Tell Mama. Rick enjoys singing and took took the mic a couple of times.

We met a table of five women from Louisanna. It was a good time. Courtney had me at "where y'all from?" Unfortuantely, I never had Courtney.

We got back to my apartment at 4:30.

Saturday morning we got out of the apartment at around 12:30 and headed down to Ground Zero. After walking around it, we came back to apartment and watched some football. Had dinner at Rosa Mexicana the went back to Don't Tell Mama, to meet up with the southern girls.

A little more about Don't Tell Mama. It's an old-fashioned piano bar. The piano player plays and sings. The wait staff and bartenders pretty much take turns singing pop songs and showtunes. The employees also have mics at the bar and walk around with them so they can join in at anytime. In other words, it's kinda gay. But, it's still fun.

So, anyway, we hooked up with Lousiana ladies again. This time there were an additional four. Apparently, this group of three sisters and their six daughters take an annual trip to New York for shopping, shows and fun. They're old money-live in mansions-wearing fur-kind of chicks. Two of them, Courtney and her sister Lauren were flat out hot. Three of them were 55+ years old. The other four were decent looking, but nothing special.

I'm a sucka for a southern accent, yo. And they brought a drawl like nobody's business.

At some point you'd think I'd follow the old adage, Go Ugly Early... go for the 'sure thing' not the 'hot thing.' Oh well.

Once again, we got back to my apartment at around 4:30.

Woke up at 11:30 and went to the Sonics - Knicks game. We had press passes and watched the game from the press box. We lost, but it was very entertaining.

After the game, we walked up to the ESPN Zone, ordered some wings and watched the first half of the Steelers - Bengals game. At halftime we came back my apartment. Giles grabbed a cab to the airport. And Rick is sleeping on my couch.

End of weekend. I'm exhausted.

No More Running?

So, two days after my best run in about six months, my back is killing me. I woke up yesterday with a tight back. Today it flat out hurts. I have to walk with a limp.

We'll see where this goes. It definitely doesn't feel as bad as the original bulging disks that required the epidural, but it's bad enough that I'm back on ibuprofen.

Visitors This Weekend

Giles is coming to town this weekend from Tampa. That'll be about a 40 degree weather drop for him. Looks like Rick might be coming out this weekend, too.

Why? For the Sonics - Knicks, of course. How many times to do get a chance to see the two worst teams in basketball.

A Little Running, A Little Biking

I'm up to six miles on my runs now. My heartrate had been pretty high, up until today. I actually have a Lance Armstrong-type maximum heartrate. This true. My max hr is roughly 200 beats per minute (bpm), which is the same as Lance. However, his resting heartrate is about 35 bpm, while mine is a hefty 70.

So, back to my heartrate. Prior to today, I had been averaged about 171 bpm. Today I came in at 161 bpm. 160 is about where I should be for a run paced like today. So, I think I'm back in decent running shape. By no means am I "race ready," but I can run six miles now without being totally winded.

Because of my back, I'm not supposed to run two straight days. So, on my in-between days, I've been riding the stationery bike. Since I'm trying to focus on running, I haven't been killing myself on the bike. Today I rode 11 miles in 3o minutes. Eventually, I'd like to ride for an hour a day. But, I'm not going to push it too hard.

A Race Don Ho Would Appreciate

Forgot one of the fun aspects to last night's run. At the two mile mark, there were tables of water set-up. Since it was just a four mile run, I decided to skip the water.

However, just beyond the water tables, they set up... champagne tables! I couldn't resist guzzling a cup of champagne in the middle of the race. I mean, how many races offer that?

It wasn't the alcohol that caused discomfort, it was the tiny bubbles. I was almost to a point where I was going to have to find someone to 'burp' me... but after a couple of minutes, it came out naturally.

Husky Football on ESPN Classic

We sure were good. This afternoon, I watched the Warren Moon in the 1978 Rose Bowl.

Now, I'm watching the '91 Rose Bowl against Iowa. I actually went to this one with my dad. What an awesome team. The next season, of course, the Huskies were one of the greatest teams of all-time.

Tomorrow night, they're showing the 2001 Rose Bowl vs. Purdue, which I attended with my mom and dad and my friend Josh.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year everyone!

So, I ran the Emerald Nuts Midnight Run in Central Park. It was a blast. I got to the Park at about 11:15 and just hung out. The DJ kinda sucked... it felt like a bad wedding. But, there was so much energy.

The race started at midnight with fireworks. Good fireworks. The first mile was slow because the fireworks were still going (they went for about 20 minutes) and there were alot of walkers. The race was fairly crowded the whole way.

After the race, I got pretty cold, so I ran the mile and a half back home.

It was definitely the healthiest New Year's Eve I've ever had. It was also the best since the time I went to Moe's on Capitol Hill to see the Presidents.
